Hello, my name is Ruth Crawford. I would like to share a little bit about myself, and what services I provide at Advanced OB/GYN Associates. As an OB/GYN nurse practitioner, I meld the nursing skills of counseling, education, and health promotion with the medical skills of assessment and management of illness. I encourage my patients to take self responsibility, and to participate in health care decisions. Following established protocols, I can perform the entire gynecological examination, and order appropriate lab tests and X-rays. But since I work in collaboration with Dr. Lenko, if I identify a problem requiring his expertise, my patients may be seen by both of us.
To be granted a state license as a Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner, I first had to be a professional registered nurse, and then complete extensive training in my specialty. I was granted a BS in Nursing from Cornell University in 1971, and was certified as a nurse practitioner though the University of Pittsburgh in 1995.
Over the last 20 years, I also worked for Family Planning clinics in the Slippery Rock-Grove City area, where I developed a nutritional approach using vitamin/mineral supplements to minimize side effects of the BCP and to alleviate PMS symptoms. Since joining Dr. Lenko, I have expanded this approach to lessen menopausal symptoms, and am also looking into other alternative therapies to deal with stress, anxiety, and depression.
My education was spread over so many years because I also had been raising two sons as a single parent. That final year at Pitt both my sons were also enrolled at the University, so we truly are a "Pitt family". Over those years I participated in a wide variety of church and community organizations in the Slippery Rock area as I shared activities with my sons. Now any leisure time finds me tramping through swamps and woods looking for birds, as I am an avid participant in the Bartramian Audobon Chapter. |
