What is and IUD?
An IUD is an intrauterine device. It is placed inside the uterus and can be done in the office. It is best known for contraceptive purposes. There are currently two available IUDs. The Paragard is a 10 year device and has no hormones associated with it. The Mirena is a 5 year device and contains the hormone levonegesterol. Both are as effective as a tubal ligation, but easily reversible, and placed in the office.
