What is pre-eclampsia of pregnancy?

A syndrome that includes all of the following after 20 week of prenancy: high blood pressure, excessive swelling and protein in urine. Early or mild symptoms indicate need for increased rest, decreased sodium intake and high protein diet. Worsening signs that need prompt medical attention include headaches, blurry vision or seeing sparkles, severe pain under your ribs and increasing swelling of face, hand and legs. Pre-eclampsia risk is greater if this is the first pregnancy, if her mother or sister had this syn-drome, twins, diabetes and for women greater than age 35.
