What is First Trimester Screening?

First trimester screening is a test that can signal if you baby is at increased risk for Down Syndrome or Trisomy 18. The test is preformed between the 11th and 13th weeks of pregnancy and combines information from ultrasound and blood test.

Down Syndrome is a chromosome problem where children where children my have an extra copy of the 21st chromosome. Chromosomes are packages of genetic material that act as a blueprint for a baby's growth and development. The extra chromosome 21 seen in Down Syndrome causes characteristic facial features, a flattened profile, mild to moderate mental retardation, and increased risk for health problems such as congenital heart defects, hearing loss and thyroid problems.

Most cases of Down Syndrome and Trisomy 18 occur by chance and do not run in families. They can occur in pregnancies regardless of the parent's age, but do become more common as the age of the mother increases.
