What is Fifth disease?

Fifth disease is caused by a virus often in the Spring time. It is called Fifth disease because it is the fifth most common childhood disease. Women who work with children are more likely to have been exposed to Fifth disease in the past. Therefore, they will more likely have immunity. If unsure of past childhood exposure, there is blood work that can be done to identify risk. Only an initial exposure poses a risk to pregnancy.
