What is an endometrial biopsy?
An endometrial biopsy is an office procedure that sample the interlining of the uterus. A thin plastic catheter can usually be passed through the vagina and cervix into the uterus. This catheter scrapes the inside of the uterus for 10 to 20 seconds. Patients can expect cramps that can be lessened by Motrin-like products before and after the procedure. It is normal to have bleeding, discharge and cramps after the procedure. This is a very safe test offered for abnormal bleeding and certain types of abnormal cells on a pap smear. It may help to determine the cause of abnormal bleeding and to rule out uterine cancer.
