What medications should be discontinued before surgery?
Prior to major surgery, i.e. hysterectomy, any medication that may interact with anesthesia or increase bleeding should be stopped. This should take place with the blessing and knowledge of the prescribing physician. Common medications that should be discontinued are Aspirin and Coumadin or Warfarin. Many over the counter supplements such as Vitamin E, Fish Oil, and Garlic can also increase the risk of bleeding. The herbal supplements Kava and Valerian may interact with anesthesia. Ephedra and Goldenseal may affect blood pressure or heart rate. Most of the time these medications and supplements need not be altered for minor surgical procedures, i.e. D&C.
