What Are the Risks Associated with Multifetal Pregnancies?
While multifetal births only account for 3% of all live births, they account for 17% of all preterm births and 24% of all low birth weight infants. One fifth of all triplet pregnancies and one half of quadruplet pregnancies result in at least 1 child a major long term handi-cap such as cerebral palsy. Multifetal pregnancies also increase the risk for maternal gestational diabetes, preclampsia as well as a very serious complication of pregnancy known as acute fatty liver of pregnancy.
