How Does Digital Mammography Differ From Traditional Mammography?

Digital Mammography captures the breast image by using a special electronic x-ray detector. This is converted into a digital picture for review on a computer monitor and then stored on a computer. The magnification, brightness and contrast of the image can be altered after the exam to help the radiologist see more clearly. Studies are underway to determine if digital mammography is equal or superior to standard film mammography in helping to detect reast cancer. Women with dense breasts, pre- or per- menopausal women, or those who are younger than 50 may benefit from digital versus film mammography.
