What is Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD)?

PMDD is a more severe form of PMS symptoms. including: feelings of hopelessness, anxiousness, frequent tearfulness, persistent anger, irritability, problems with focusing on work or school and trouble with family or friends. Physical symptoms include breast tenderness or swelling, headaches, joint or muscle pain, bloating sensation and weight gain. While symptoms are similar to depression and anxiety, PPMD symptoms only occur before a woman's period. The cause is unknown, but some women are more sensitive to hormone changes. Treatment is with behavioral changes first. If this doesn't work, medications can be tried, such as an antidepressant either taken every day or just for two weeks before their menstrual period.
